Linet Kambanja’s Journey: From FGM Survivor to Community Health Advocate

“My name is Linet Kambanja, I come from Tharicia village in Meru County. I am 23 years old and a Diploma in Community Health Graduate from the Kenya Medical Training College. In the year 2013, When I was twelve years old, I witnessed many girls in my village undergo Female Genital Mutilation. Some were forced or coerced by parents, relatives, or guardians, while others consented due to pervasive myths and misconceptions, or simply because they were unaware of the harm it caused,” Linet says.

Linet was once amidst a community deeply rooted in the practice of Female Genital Mutilation. Ten years ago, she embarked on a transformative journey through CIFORD Kenya’s Alternative Rite of Passage program. “My turning point came through CIFORD Kenya’s Alternative Rite of Passage program. My mother, a member of the Tharicia women group, introduced me to this transformative initiative. CIFORD Kenya worked with local women’s groups, offering an alternative to the traditional, harmful practices by providing educational seminars.” The 23-year-old says.

Reflecting on this opportunity, Linet recalls, “When the chance to join the Alternative Rite of Passage presented itself, I didn’t hesitate. We attended a week-long seminar covering various crucial topics such as girls’ rights, female reproductive health, the dangers of FGM, life skills, positive aspects of Ameru culture, mental health, and career development. The seminar concluded with a graduation and a procession to raise awareness about fighting FGM.”

The impact of this program on Linet’s life was profound. It not only protected her from FGM but also set her on a path toward a brighter future. “After the seminar, I joined high school and later enrolled at the Kenya Medical Training College, where I pursued a Diploma in Community Health. The teachings from CIFORD Kenya guided my decisions and helped me navigate my educational journey smoothly. I graduated in March 2024,” Linet says with pride.

Today, Linet stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment in her community. She has not only dodged the dangers of FGM but has also become a community champion against the practice. “My special thanks to CIFORD Kenya. I am so empowered, and I now dedicate myself to empowering teenage girls to reach their full potential. Let every empowered girl empower another, building a sustainable community,” Linet concludes with a victorious smile.

Her story is a powerful testament to the impact of girl’s education and empowerment.
