A kitchen garden is a small plot of land in which vegetables are grown for household consumption. This is meant to make use of kitchen waste water which is sieved to remove leftover food and involves small irrigation practices by use of water buckets and watering cans. We advocate for kitchen gardens because it lowers the cost of purchasing vegetables from the market, and helps foster a sense responsibility and achievement in providing fresh vegetables for the family meals and a source of income
Most farmers do not know dryland farming techniques which require less water with good vegetable production throughout the year, this made CIFORD Kenya together with Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland conduct a one-day seminar on land preparation which was more of practical’s to equip the women with more skills on land preparation techniques.

Before they went for practical they had a talk from the director, CIFORD Kenya, whereby she talked about the importance of kitchen gardens and encouraged them to a adopt the new techniques of preparing land for their kitchen gardening as it is water saving the land being a semi-arid area. She also talked about the April visit whereby we shall have visitors from Soroptimistinternational, they will be around for one week and they will have to visit the farmers, she explained how the visit will be and gave them the program. After the talked they had a cup of tea then we proceeded to the demonstration farm where they carried out their practical’s.

Farmers were grouped according to their groups, they divided themselves into small groups of fives and prepared several portions using different techniques i.e mandala and raised beds. Due to bad weather conditions, we were not able to apply all the techniques.

- Farmers were able to learn and practically do the land preparation using different techniques and planted different types of vegetables.
- Farmer cooperated well so we were able to finish the training at the right time.
